Transrockies Challenge 2003 - Seventh Stage
17.08.2003 - After riding more than 600 km and 12,000 vertical metres though the Canadian Rockies, 149 cyclists in the Transrockies Challenge, the toughest mountain bike race in the world, today crossed the finish line today in Canmore, Alberta.
The Adidas/Fiat Rotwild team of Andreas Strobel and Silvio Wieltschnig proved to be unbeatable again today, finishing the 78 km stage in 3:33.37, for a total winning time of 30:06.10 for the seven-day event. Second place finishers, Andreas Hestler and Matt Decore, both of Vancouver, B.C., finished the day in 3:47.00 for a total time of 31:47.13. Third place went to Matthew Patterson and Greg Reain of Barrie, Ont., who had a cumulative time of 32:18.09.
Women's champions Christina Begy, from Denver,Colorado, and Louise Kobin, of San Jose, California, completed the final stage in 4:30.18 for a time of 40:20.30. The Canmore, Alberta team of Jeanie Godfrey and Valerie Thompson came in about one hour after the leaders but secured the silver medal position with a total time of 48:46.54. Third place went to Kari Ferlatte and Katrina Monsour who had a time of 52:57.40 for the seven days.
In the mixed category, the Adidas-Martini-Holltrading team of Martin and Simone Hornegger, of Austria, once again kept the lead today with a time of 4:21.06 to capture first place with a cumulative time of 37:31.03. Martin and Karen Masson of the SoBe/Cannondale team finished with a total time of 32:56.56. John Gibson and Jean Mcallister of Canmore were third overall with a time of 39:27.30.
The champion masters VELOMAG team from Quebec, Michel Leblanc, 39, and Gilles Morneau, 44, completed the week in a time of 35:29.15. They finished about one hour ahead of the Flash5 Ryders/Rocky Mountain/Crystal Decision team of Tony Routley, 47, and Eric Crowe, 43, both of Whistler, B.C, who had a second place time of 36:30.41. Last year's master's champions Mciek Slodyczka,34, and Stand Trebunia,49, won third this year with a toital time of 37:33.04.
Brett Wolfe, the one legged cyclist from Seattle, Wash, completed the event with a total time of 49:43.15 with his partner Julene Mitchell of Santa Cruz, Calif.for a nine place ranking in the mixed division.
